Goa is a sea shore state . Pune is in ranges of sahyadri. So going to goa from Pune you always have to cross ghats of sahyadri at one of the places. There are 3 routs to cross those ghats
One from kolhapur the amba ghat, one from nipani the a amboli ghat , and the last one from belgaon the ponda ghat.
We have to travel about 426 to 478 kms to goa from various roots depending up not the route chosen.
While going from Pune we traveled by nh4 national highway from Pune to Bangalore . Via katraj tunnel and via shirwal the khambayati ghat is next to shirwal . The ghat is when you are going to Bangalore but the same ghat is tunneled when you are coming from Bangalore.
After the khambayati ghat is passed there is a road on rt side to mahabaleshwar.
After about 2 hrs you reach Satara. The historic place associated with sambhaji the son of Shivaji. Many freedom movements. The place is surrounded by many fortes. The nh4 is very nice and the distance is not felt as the car moves smoothly . We were in maruti desire of course. In the morning we started at 6am sharp there was no tea stall up till now as the express highways do not any place to shop access. We did not stop for the same. We started to go to kolhapur . In the mean time Karad is the town we crossed. The Nira river is near Karad.It had a big bazar on the highway and various big buildings were also seen.
After about 4 hrs from pune we were approaching Kolhapur. Just about 12 kms from kolhapur on lt side near a villege , name I don't remember we have seen a 100feet Ganesh idol (ltalest in world) It was about 5 kms from highway. But the outer border and shadow appearance was visible.
We reached kolhapur. But did not enter the town because we were not going through the first ghat Amba ghat which we could have got by passing through kolhapur. By which goa is 478 kms. We had to pass through busy roads of kolhapur and must have taken 1 hr more to reach mapusa goa.
We continued towards Bangalore and the kolhapur was bypassed. After about 20kms the maharashtra border ends and the Karnataka border starts. The first town in karnatak is Nipani. We were searching for RTO check post to pay the entry tax for karnatak but the RTO officer refused to take the single loop tax because it is practice in karnatak to get yearly tax only.we were totally upset as the tax was exorbitant. Or you have to go back to maharashtra and go through kolhapur via amba ghat which we have avoided . This was only because of our taxi permit vehicle. Private cars were not asked any tax.ultimately we decided to take name of Ganapati and move forward . I knew that the nh4 is only for 15 kms in karnatak and we will be leaving karnatak after nipani. There is hotel named hotel satyavati palace from where there is a road towards amboli ghat. Once you leave highway no RTO posts and no RTOs to catch you. After about 20 minutes we are back in Maharashtra border. We took tea and snacks when we were back in Maharashtra.the hotel was small but clean.the eatables were freshly prepared and cheap . People were very helping. We started to move to a AMBOLI ghat . The ghat was approximately 15 kms long . There were waterfall points along with the ghats. Thoughthe falls were dry for the season in February 10 th 2015.the Savant wadi is about 30 kms from AMBOLI ghat . We reached there at about 1 pm . After 7 hrs. The Savant wadi is the place where Bombay goa road meets AMBOLI SAWANTWADI road. There is a new by pass road of Bombay goa road which bypasses Savantwadi from its west side.we entered savant wadi town the central lake was on our rt we passed the lake and moved towards south to mapusa. The bypass rd met us after 8 kms and we were on nj 17 mumbai goa highway. The TERAKOL river was on our rt side flowing along with us. Then the goa border appeared after about 40 kms the check post you have to pay the entry tax. ( our taxi was totally unprepared for travel and did not have papers. We had to prey to RTO and the God man let us go with out tax payment .
We reached Mapusa at 3:20 pm
